Health is more than just what you put in your mouth




There are many variations of circle of life out there.  When you look at the nitty gritty details, you can divide these areas into dozens. However, I want to simplify these areas of life, so we don’t get hung up on the terminology. I found out that the more we try to overcomplicate things, the more confused we get. We want to focus on the basics first. Then, when we get to my advanced classes, we can dive deeper.

Our health is basically divided into 3 categories.

1. Emotional - Mind

2. Physical - Body

3. Spiritual - Spirit

If we get all 3 of these arears under control and to the point where we are 70-80% satisfied with them, we will be that much happier. Of course, our main goal is getting as close to 100% satisfaction as possible, but it is important to remember that life is a process. This won’t be achieved overnight.

Emotional health includes your relationships with yourself and with others, your social life, your home environment, and how satisfied you are with the things that bring you joy. Your career/finance health is just how much you are satisfied with your job and finances.

Your physical health includes your food and nutrition, your exercise habits, and, of course, your health in general.

Your spiritual health includes your connection to the energetic source, God/the universe, nature, and your rituals or routines that bring your connections closer and strengthen them.

Taking care of your health starts with self-love. Health is more than just what you put in your mouth. It encompasses so many things, and the first step is learning how important you are and that you are enough. Learn to accept yourself and know that you come first. Is there a way to lose weight and live a long, healthy life without giving up delicious meals and spending a fortune? YES.  YES.  YES. 

We have all heard about the healthy Mediterranean diet, the healthy Japanese lifestyle, and the long and healthy life of people who live in the so-called “Blue Zone.” The western lifestyle and diet are, unfortunately, spreading throughout these “healthy zones.” We see more and more people living in what is supposed to be a healthy culture, yet they are gaining unhealthy weight. The SAD American diets are gaining popularity around the world. There’s McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and a bunch of other fast-food restaurants in places like China, Thailand, and Japan. Food companies and restaurants are also starting to pick up the unhealthy habit of adding sugar in everything.

In order for our health to change, we must pay attention to what we eat. We can’t allow situations like being a single mom or working 2-3 jobs to interfere with our food choices, because, ultimately, we will end up paying a hefty price for the exchange of “convenience.”

Do you need to completely change the way you look at food? YES! Food is a source of nutrients that nourish your body. You don’t eat because you want to stop the hunger! You eat because your body needs fuel. Not just any fuel, but good, nutritious fuel that will support you, help you thrive, and carry you throughout your life.

Move your body

You cannot have a healthy body and be sedentary. We all need to do some form of physical activity to keep our muscles strong and our bones healthy. It’s not just about weight. There was a time in my life when I was very much skinny, but I was not doing enough exercises. My legs were weak, and my muscles weren’t strong. It doesn’t take long to go from fit to fat or fit to flabby. It only takes a few months, if not a few weeks, for some people to literally ruin their body. The good news is, this is reversible if you catch the habit early enough.

I’m not an exercise expert, but I spent most of my younger years playing sports. I remember waking up at 6 a.m. every Saturday morning and waiting for my uncle to come pick me up to go play tennis. That was the highlight of my week. I love playing tennis, and that was my drive. Now, I still play tennis, but I have other responsibilities to take care of. I make time to play tennis as part of my “fun” activities. Which, lucky for me, also counts as a form of exercise.

My advice to anyone who has never really been active is to start somewhere. Start with walking, then jog, then run. Take baby steps. Make sure you check with your doctor if you have any type of health issues that prevent you from doing certain physical activities.

Find a sport that you love and find someone to do it with. Physical activity doesn’t need to be boring hours in the gym. It can be doing fun things like biking in a park, walking, hiking, and playing sports that you love. Canoeing and kayaking are forms of physical activities too, and they are fun to do. Get creative. Turn on your favorite dance song on YouTube and dance away in the privacy of your own living room.

When I was younger, my sisters and I would go out and climb trees, and those were fun for us. We were super healthy kids compared to many kids from the new generation. We all need to make an effort to go outside more. I’m not suggesting that we go climb trees in the park; rather, take a walk outdoors and spend more time being active outside.

The Spirit (Your spiritual health)

The goal of spiritual health is to help you bring your physical, mental, and emotional health into balanced.   This path of energy health will empower you to live life with compassion for yourself, for others, and for our planet Earth.  Overall, you will be healthier.

What does it mean to have a healthy spirit or to have spiritual health? It means to feel at peace with everything and everyone. To achieve spiritual health, we must practice getting connected with the source and nature. Spirituality is not a religion. Spirituality is having a deeper meaning, and this is different for everyone. Just like the journey of life, we are all at different points on our spiritual path. However, we must know the basics and practice at least those basics every day to realize our full health and vitality.

Asides from connectedness, humans yearn to find out what the meaning of life. Why are we here? I don’t think any guru out there can give you a definite answer, but the practice of looking inward will provide the individual meaning for you.

What I like to do with my clients is look at spirituality and health as one: the triad of mind, body, and soul. There is a fine line that separate the body from the soul. There is your energetic body, which, to me, is very close to your spiritual body. You are energy, and everything and everyone is made of energy. Now, scientists can measure your energetic field. In 1994, the National Institute of Health (NIH) coined this energetic field as “biofields.” Just like trees, animals, and all objects, humans have an energetic signature.

Ancient cultures practiced balancing energy centers, which is called “Chakra” in Indian culture and “Chi” in Chinese culture. These are 7 main energy centers that run through the central line of the body. We can learn to balance these centers through meditation and through connecting with nature. You can also get your energy centers balanced via reiki treatment. 

When we are more balanced energetically, we are more in tune with nature and in tune with the triad of mind, body, and soul. In this space of energetically balanced, there is more sense of connectedness and less judgement. The aches, pains, and diseases tend to lessen or dissolve like a true miracle or what current scientists call “the placebo effect.”
